Amodimethicone

What it is

A type of silicone used in conditioners and leave-in products, marketed as 'amine-functional' because it is designed to selectively adhere to damaged areas of the hair.

Why it matters for curly hair

Like other silicones, amodimethicone coats the hair and creates a barrier that blocks moisture. While it is sometimes described as 'water-soluble,' it still builds up on the hair over time and requires a clarifying or sulfate shampoo to fully remove. For low-porosity hair especially, this buildup prevents products from absorbing and leaves hair feeling gummy.
